Description

Open Water

Open Water is a deeply poetic and emotionally charged debut novel by Caleb Azumah Nelson that explores the tenderness and tension of young Black love in modern Britain. Set in South East London, the story follows two young Black British artists he, a photographer; she, a dancer who meet in a pub and slowly fall in love. Their connection is immediate, undeniable, and deeply intimate, rooted in shared experiences of identity, belonging, and art.

Both characters have navigated predominantly white spaces since childhood, winning scholarships to private schools and struggling to reconcile their inner selves with environments that often excluded or misunderstood them. Now, in the chaotic pulse of London, they are trying to make their voices heard, grappling with the highs and lows of creativity, relationships, and the ever-present gaze of a society that sees them only in terms of their Blackness.

Open Water is a love story, but not a simple one. It captures the joy and vulnerability of emotional intimacy while also confronting the outside forces racism, trauma, and expectations of masculinity that make that vulnerability risky. The protagonist, in particular, must wrestle with his inability to open up, to trust that safety can be found in the closeness of another human being. As their relationship deepens, the fear of loss and the weight of unspoken wounds begin to threaten what they’ve built.

Written in lyrical, second-person prose, Open Water places the reader directly in the emotional landscape of the narrator’s world. The style is fluid and immersive, echoing the title itself drifting, flowing, and at times pulling the reader under with raw intensity. It’s a book about being seen in a world that refuses to truly look, about the soft spaces between strength and sensitivity, and about how love, for all its beauty, can also be a mirror for pain.

Open Water is a celebration of Black love and artistry, and a meditation on what it means to be fully human in a world that too often reduces people to their trauma. Bold, intimate, and unforgettable, it’s a novel that stays with you long after the last page.
